Canvas Finnabair style

I have a friend who when she saw my Finn journals just fell in love with them and wanted to have a go at making something in that style. So I set up a day where we worked on a canvas each. Bearing in mind she has never crafted or done mixed media art before, she did a really great job.

Here are the photos of Sue’s canvas

And my canvas …..

P1140692
We started by layering papers and adding texture paste through some stencils. When it was dry we sprayed some inks lightly on, stamped some images and splattered it with tea.

Next we started the composition by deciding where our photo was going to go and adding strips of canvas, coloured and patterned card, lace and gauze.
P1140707
The last layers were the embellishments using flowers wood and metal pieces and more card where it was needed.
P1140711
I used Evo-Stick wood glue which worked a treat to adhere everything down securely. The photograph is a download, this girl really seems to have a great character to me.
P1140712
Then finally sprayed with more inks.
P1140713
This little butterfly I found in my bits box left over from another project sometime ago.

We had the most wonderful day together and Sue was so pleased to take home her canvas that she finished. And I have to say I am rather pleased with mine too.

I hope you are having a great week. I thought I would share this quote I found -

I saw as a teacher how, if you take that spark of learning that those children have, and you ignite it, you can take a child from any background to a lifetime of creativity and accomplishment.

This shows your talent as a teacher to take someone who isn't a crafter, hasn't explored Mixed Media and yet this is the result - absolutely gorgeous!

WAUW I´m certainly amazed, how talented your friend is, and almost can´t believe, she´s never made something like this before. Tey´re both really gorgeous, but somehow I would expect yours to be, but a complete newbie, that´s fantastic to make such a project. Can´t I come and get a day wit private classes too? ha ha ha Would really love to learn something like this too, it looks fabulous both of them.

Lucky Sue to have had such a great teacher. Both canvasses look wonderful. I don't think they are really Finnabair - rather a whole new style which is wonderful. Wish I was crafting rather than working ... hey ho my time will come!! LOL A xx

Hello Brenda
I do believe we all have the ability to create, it is a matter of being able to have the confidence and courage to tap into it, and believe.
Both pieces are wonderful, having the freedom to apply all the different mediums is difficult when it is the first time, but perhaps that was the advantage for your friend, she trusted you to lead her, but she appears to have the ability not to be afraid to express herself, as there are subtle differences between the two works. I can imagine she was thrilled. 'If you have knowledge, let others light their candles with it'. I think hers are burning brightly.
Smiles:)

Wow, no one would ever guess your friends has never crafted before .....I reckon you're having us on, lol! Seriously though, her canvas is wonderful and having done a Finn weekend I know only too well it's not simple by any means. Both canvases are gorgeous and I bet you had a very special day together too.

Fabulous canvases, both of them... how lovely to spend a day introducing someone to the joys of crafting, and with such amazing results! Great work.

Sorry to be so behind - you know why. Looking forward to doing some proper catching up over the next week, as I gradually unpack the craft stash boxes!

Brenda...I love your Finnabair style canvas. It's a bit like hers...but much more of a vintage flair. :) I love the photograph. So sweet. I also love all of your textured background and added strips of paper, laces and die cuts. It all works so well together. Love the metal embellishments, too. And the flowers you've added on top really do finish it off beautifully. Love it! <3 Candy
