Revisiting old Techniques - Emboss Resist

I love this technique and have used it alot in the past but I thought I would update it to create a vintage shabby timeworn look.

Process Steps

1. Paint a coat of acrylic paint over the surface and dry - I used rust.

2. Stamp with embossing ink, cover with clear embossing powder and heat.

3. When cool paint over the entire surface with another colour, this time I chose ocean breeze.

4. Leave it to dry until it's just tacky to the touch then wipe over with a damp cloth to remove the paint from the embossed image. The harder you wipe the more you will reveal. If like me you are using something like greyboard that rubbed back to the original surface take the underneath color and with your finger fill in the rubbed out area and distress by dabbing it gently.

5. Give it a timeworn look by adding a couple of watery washes of rust and quinacridone gold and leave to dry naturally.

6, Sand the edges and rub around with brown or rust coloured permanent inks - I used coffee archival.

I am still having fun with some new Andy Skinner products and today I am sharing this media board on Andy's blog.

Process steps

Take a piece of greyboard and cut to size. Firstly layer gesso with a palette knife - dry and repeat round the edges with white crackle paste. Again leave to dry.

Blend layers of blues and browns media fluid acrylics until you are happy with the background. I kept it fairly light at this stage with ideas of stencil textures and dripped inks through it. 

I rollered out some clay and stamped it with the 'Dem Bones' fish stamp several times and dried with a heat gun.

After giving them two coats of gesso I painted and spritzed water over until I was happy with a mottled background and then gently rubbed titanium white over the raised areas with my finger.

The seabed is made up of coloured up cheesecloth and ....

.... die cuts roughly painted and just left as they are.

As I was laying out the design I still wanted to add some text or texture in the background but my brain was also saying no that would look too busy. So as they say know when to give up before you over do it! So I left it apart from some simple splatters of paint ....

.... until everything was glued on and I just couldn't resist adding some prussian blue drippage under the fish.

For a change this worked out similar to how I wanted it to. I was originally thinking about fossil displays but I'm really quite happy with this.

I've made a tag for this theme today at Tando Creative.

I used a media board painted with gesso and when dry scraped white modeling paste through a stencil.

These pieces I took from a bits box which were already painted - leftovers from previous projects.

I also grabbed these from another bits box of Tando leftovers to add to the design. As you can see these were not painted or sealed so I started by gluing these to the media board ...

.... and when dry I gave it all a coat of gesso.

Next I sprayed some water based and DecoArt white mister over the surface, dried it and repeated again to give me my base  colours ...

.... and then dribbled some watery media acrylic paints, ....

.... sanded and inked the edges of the board and finished with some splatters of titanium white.

Because the sprays I used were water based they created some lovely mottled effects together when I spritzed them and when I repeated the layer.

I have been having fun with chipboards for this project. I love layering up greyboard shapes but sometimes they end up protruding too high especially if you want to use some in a journal or on media boards. So for this project I have soaked some of my Andy greyboard shapes and pulled them apart and it's amazing how you can then play with distressing the layers of the greyboard and even get to put some back together again to create different shapes as I have done here.

I am using a piece of greyboard cut to the size I want as a page for the Andy book I am making.

Process Steps

Paint the greyboard with gesso but do not have too much on the brush so that this almost becomes a dry brushing technique.

Repeat with cerulean blue and prussian blue keeping the edges darker.

Scrape over some gesso with a palette knife keeping it horizontal to the board and getting a distressed look. Dry.

 Repeat with some white crackle paste and this time leave to dry naturally.

Take your chosen greyboard shapes and soak the ones you want to split into thinner pieces and distress. These can be dried with a heat gun.

I split the industrial wings into 4 pieces and took the two thinnest ones for this project. When they were dry I glued them together to create a new shape with a hole in the centre and decided to use a retro palette for the rest of the colouring up.

When they were dry the small rectangle and the heart got a coat of quinacridone red and a wash of carbon black over them.

The industrial wings had cobalt teal hue, titan buff, a tiny amount of yellow oxide stippled over them then a random wash of red iron oxide.

Back to the backboard now it's dry and cracked. Mix a watery wash of turquoise blue hue and prussian blue, paint it over and rub away immediately with a piece of dry kitchen roll. This takes the edge off the white and tones it in with the colours we originally used. It also gives us some nicely defined cracks. Seal it now with a coat of matte varnish.

Use transparent red iron oxide and yellow oxide washes to layer more colour over the background. Dry between each layer.

Use paynes grey as a thick wash to go round the edges use a water spritzer and heat gun.

Stamp the words, add your chipboards using heavy gel medium and finish them with a coat of matte varnish.

It didn't quite look finished to me so I added a few remnant rubs, then I was happy.

The colours are pretty good too. It's not a palette I've used before but I'm loving the retro feel to it.

Route 66 media board - Tando Creative

I have a quick post today sharing a small media board from Tando Creative, one I made for one of the visits Di made to Hochanda.

The Route 66 badge was stencilled onto a piece of leftover painty paper using  cerulean blue, phthalo blue and paynes grey media fluid acrylics.

The quote was stenciled using black modeling paste.

The background was created using a cracked distressed technique I have used before. The blues were chosen to get a retro look.



Short and sweet I'm afraid but sometimes time is of the essence.

Book panel for Andy Skinner

So I decided to do something different this year for my Andy Skinner posts and create a heavyweight panel book so you will see a few more of these coming over the next few months so that I can keep some of my more grungy mixed media work together..

Process steps

Paint the board with phthalo green-blue, prussian blue hue, cerulean blue and titan buff. Heat dry.
Drag slightly watery paynes grey around the edges, spritz with water, let it move about and heat dry. This frames the board.

Apply crackle paste through Andy's fossil stencil and put aside to dry.

Take the telephone dial and roughly scrape over some texture sand paste.
Rustify the frame pieces of greyboard I wanted to follow along with team member Hannah's fabulous Facebook live video which you can find HERE.

I sort of repeated Hannah's process on the telephone dial as well but she talked about mixing it up - so I did.

I took the printed numbers dial from the kit and gave it a coat of dirty matte medium wash to seal it and make it look aged. I stamped the circular board from Andy's Curiosity set of stamps in both coffee and black archival ink and also gave that a coat of dirty matte medium (thats decoart matte medium mixed with a little paynes grey and quin gold - just the tiniest pin prick amounts and a wet brush!).

It was here I started to assemble pieces and play with designs to the point that I really didn't like the room the frame took up, it created a distraction from the beautiful fossil and telephone dial. I knew I would use it some point but just not on this composition. After fiddling with all sorts of bits and pieces I decided I would go for book corners and simply make them look rusty with layers of watery quin gold. I also added some watery washes over the fossil crackle to start the transformation process using cerulean blue and red iron oxide,

 Next I scraped black modeling paste through Andy's Bubbles stencil around the fossil. When that was dry I also added some random patches of texture sand paste. It looks really grungy and not too attractive at the moment. Now the inner critic set in - was this going to work? etc, etc.

Once dry the fun began using all the rusty layering colours of paint with a water spritzer and a heat gun. I used paynes grey, burnt umber, transparent yellow iron oxide and quinacridone gold.

Then time to assemble.
