I had a fabulous crafty day with my friend Shirley recently and we decided to get the melt pots out and play with beeswax. With my theme of ‘Letters’ this month at Country View Challenges I decided to use some Italian dictionary paper (gifted to me by the wonderful Gio), A napkin that had fabulous images and also text on it, a text stamp on the background and then die-cut letters for the title.
This is a small (ish) chipboard home decor piece I created for my kitchen.
One thing I learned playing with napkin images and other papers is that layering of pieces is crucial. The cockerel layered over the dictionary paper only just works, the dictionary text shows through and became so translucent with the wax on it.
Here you can see the text from the napkin as well as the die-cut letters.
The Italian dictionary paper.
The stamped text can just be seen behind the cockerel’s head.
You can also see how I highlighted the die-cut letters with a white posca pen to make them stand out more and I painted some detail over the cockerel to ensure he stood out as much as possible too.
And at this angle you can just see the shine of the surface after I buffed the wax. I also sanded the edges and inked then with walnut stain DI.
Have you entered our challenge yet? There’s always a great prize for the lucky winner as well as Winner and Top 3 Guest Designer spots. Hope we see you there

How creative you are Brenda...I am not sure I am brave enough to try working with serviettes...far too fragile! You have made such a pretty wall hanging. The cockeral is a stunning focal and your letters have featured in so many ways. I would love to have a go with a melt pot...I think that needs to go on the list of things to try! It's turned so chilly today, keep warm. Hugs xx

ReplyDeleteOoooh Brenda what is not to love about this rustic panel. The mix of papers and colours is fabulous with that cockeral taking centre stage and wax, it is a beautiful medium to work with and yet I never use it nearly often enough.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!

Oh this is just perfection Brenda! This is exactly the "style" I want in my kitchen. I bought a message/chalk board with folky chickens on for inspiration, but this is much better :D XXX
ReplyDeleteI love this Brenda! First of all, I love all the use of words you have on your piece. Great DT piece for this month's challenge. Next, I adore the translucency that comes from using beeswax on different types of paper. Just amazing effects. I know you are really going to enjoy this piece in your kitchen. Thanks for the inspiration!!! -- Mary Elizabeth

Such a brilliant rustic look to this, with those rich warm colours - I can almost smell the fresh baguettes out of the oven. Love that translucent cockerel revealing the text behind - and I'm definitely going to play with some beeswax soon (it's sitting waiting for me, though it'll be a question of ovens and tin trays rather than a Melting Pot!). Fabulous make.
